Description

MedCoach is a Learning Management Software that allows Medical Students to prepare for their Medical Resident Aspirant National Exam (ENARM, by its acronym in Spanish), the Mexican version of the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination). MedCoach provides topics, resources, and simulated exams according to their complexity, available time, and study load so a student gathers all the required knowledge asked in the ENARM. By using MedCoach, Medical Resident Aspirants can prepare to ace this once-a-year, 3-day, comprehensive exam, so they can choose their specialization and continue their medical career.

About the project

We were responsible for developing an LMS, an ERP, and a comprehensive Design System. LMS delivers a progressive learning experience to study resources, track progress, simulate exams, and provide reminders for pending material. In addition, this SaaS needed to give smart and interactive feedback about their progress through the study material in the platform. Users can confirm the progress made on the whole study plan with a personalized onboarding process, a daily dose of subjects, and delightful interactions.

We developed an ERP to feed content into the platform and manage user subscriptions. For example, MedCoach's Team updated Study guides and exam Simulators to the latest version of their licensing exam. In addition, diagnostic tools are modified, supervised, and corrected using the same ERP.

MedCoach's Design System helped the development team implementation of the platform. The original design, provided by the founders, needed to be standardized and optimized for components, design tokens, and hand-off. Our main focus was on creating a consistent visual experience from landing to study tools to ensure they were involved in their effort's tracking and measuring. Furthermore, we developed the pricing scheme, onboarding, and sales process with the founders to be a market-fit product.

Main Design Challenge

How might we involve medical students in tracking and measuring their progress so they are mindful of their advancement or setbacks through the study material?

The study material must be flagged as "Completed" to progress the study plan further. First, we identified the primary resources while studying; such as study guides, flashcards, and exam simulations, then we would design interactions depending on the resource. These interactions needed to be contextual, precise, and insightful of the action at hand. Some of these interactions ranged from press-and-hold buttons to hot-zone-triggered buttons. We placed them strategically to immerse the students in the study session fully.

Conclusion

We developed the LMS for the learning experience, a simple ERP to manage study material, subscriptions, and simulated exams, and a Design System for fast implementation and consistency. Students now self-manage their personalized study paths, and some students renew their study plans even after presenting their Licensing Exam to continue learning. We incorporated and expanded the brand through interactions, storyboarded loaders, and strategically placed features on exams, flashcards, and study guides so students would be mindful of their actions. The platform is currently self-sustainable and going strong after three years in a row.
